Emphasizing non-traditional techniques, information, psychological operations, and distributed tactics rather than conventional military engagements, the phrase “5th Generation War” (5GW) describes a new idea of warfare. Unlike earlier generations of warfare, which depended on raw force and large-scale conflicts, 5GW tries to erode the opponent’s will and capabilities with a mix of technology, social media, and asymmetrical tactics.

Salient features of fifth generation warfare

Five GW gives control over information top priority as a weapon. This covers the use of psychological operations, disinformation, and propaganda to change public opinion and impact decision-making. Stories that can destabilize countries and generate opposition are routinely shared on social media sites.
Cyberwarfare, terrorism, guerilla tactics, and other strategies meant to take advantage of the shortcomings of a more strong opponent are among the unusual tactics used by state and non-state actors in **asymmetrical** form of warfare. This strategy lets smaller groupings efficiently confront more established, bigger armed formations.
Though conventional military systems are frequently hierarchical, 5GW stresses distributed networks that function independently. This makes it more difficult for rivals to identify and attack important leaders or infrastructure, as many of them could function without a clear line of command.
