Earth’s “Second Moon”:

Earth is poised to welcome what is being called a “second moon” tonight in an exciting astronomical event. This uncommon celestial event will enthrall skywatchers as an asteroid circles Earth, momentarily caught by Earth’s gravity. Officially referred to as a “quasi-moon,” this celestial visitor is a natural satellite that, for a limited period, replicates the orbit of our permanent moon before continuing its trip through space.

Describe the Quasi-Moon.

An asteroid that is briefly drawn into Earth’s gravitational field is known as a quasi-moon. This is in contrast to the normal moon, which has been in a stable orbit for billions of years. These objects seem to be a second natural satellite of Earth for a few years, but they are not actual moons. The asteroid will continue to circle Earth until it ultimately breaks free of the planet’s gravity, at this point,it will become a tiny, dim object in the night sky.

Since these quasi-moons are uncommon and the particular asteroid that is passing by tonight won’t be seen again until 2055, astronomers and skywatchers have a rare chance to see this phenomenon.

The Phenomenon’s Asteroid Cause

Kamoʻoalewao (2016 HO3) is the name of the asteroid that is buzzing, and it was found in 2016. It is among the nearest near-Earth objects, revolving around our planet in a way that gives…
