An essential part of Earth’s atmosphere, greenhouse gases (GHGs) are responsible for controlling the planet’s temperature. But because of human activity, they have grown rapidly, making them one of the biggest problems of our day. The science underlying greenhouse gases, their causes, impacts, and the actions we can take to lessen those effects are all covered in this article.

What Are Greenhouse Gases?

Greenhouse gases are gases found in the atmosphere that capture solar heat and keep it from escaping back into space. The Earth remains warm enough to support life because of this occurrence, which is called the greenhouse effect. Among the main greenhouse gases are:

Deforestation, burning fossil fuels, and some industrial operations all release carbon dioxide (CO₂).
Methane (CH₄): Released by cattle and other agricultural activities, as well as during the extraction and transportation of coal, oil, and natural gas.

Nitrous Oxide (N2O): Produced by burning organic materials and industrial and agricultural processes.
Synthetic gases utilised in industrial settings, such as perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), are known as fluorinated gases.

Why Are Greenhouse Gases a Concern?

Although the greenhouse effect is necessary to keep the Earth’s temperature stable, global warming results from an overabundance of…
